Temperature Excursion
Any deviation of product temperature outside its specified acceptable range during storage or transportation.
A temperature excursion occurs when the temperature of a product or its surrounding environment deviates outside the acceptable range defined in the shipping specifications. Excursions can be caused by equipment failures, improper loading, door seal breaches, extended loading times, pre-cooling failures, or simply a reefer unit that is not set to the correct temperature.
Temperature excursions are classified by their severity and duration. A minor excursion might involve a brief deviation of 1 to 2 degrees that is quickly corrected, while a major excursion could involve extended exposure to temperatures significantly outside the acceptable range. The impact on product quality depends on the product type, the magnitude of the temperature deviation, and the duration of the exposure. Some products can tolerate brief minor excursions without quality impact, while others, such as fresh seafood or pharmaceuticals, can be rendered unsafe by even short temperature deviations.
Proper excursion management includes immediate detection through real-time monitoring, notification of relevant stakeholders, corrective action to restore the correct temperature, assessment of product impact, documentation of the event, and root cause analysis to prevent recurrence. The FDA FSMA rule requires that shippers and carriers have documented procedures for identifying and correcting temperature excursions during transportation.
The financial cost of temperature excursions extends beyond the value of the lost product. Retailers may impose chargebacks and penalties. Customer relationships can be damaged. Repeated excursions on the same lane or with the same carrier indicate systemic problems that can lead to loss of business. Investing in proper monitoring, equipment maintenance, and training is far less expensive than absorbing the costs of preventable excursions.
