Reefer Truck

A reefer truck, short for refrigerated truck, is a vehicle equipped with a self-powered refrigeration unit that maintains a controlled temperature environment within the cargo area during transportation. These vehicles are essential for moving perishable goods such as fresh produce, frozen meats, dairy products, pharmaceuticals, and other temperature-sensitive cargo.

Modern reefer units can maintain temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Fahrenheit to +70 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the model and configuration. The refrigeration system is typically powered by a small diesel engine mounted on the front of the trailer, independent of the truck's main engine. Some newer units use electric standby power or hybrid systems for more efficient operation during loading and unloading.

Reefer trailers come in standard 53-foot lengths for over-the-road hauling, as well as shorter 28-foot and 48-foot configurations for regional delivery. Multi-temperature reefer trailers use movable bulkheads to create separate temperature zones within a single trailer, allowing frozen and chilled products to be transported together without temperature cross-contamination.

Key components of a reefer system include the compressor, condenser, evaporator, insulated walls, air chute for directing airflow, and digital temperature controls. Regular maintenance of these components is critical to preventing breakdowns that can result in product losses worth tens of thousands of dollars per load.
