Pre-Cooling
The process of lowering a product or trailer temperature to the required shipping temperature before loading, essential for maintaining cold chain integrity.
Pre-cooling refers to two related but distinct processes in cold chain logistics. Product pre-cooling is the removal of field heat or ambient temperature from a product before it is loaded into a transportation vehicle. Trailer pre-cooling is the process of bringing the interior of a reefer trailer down to the required shipping temperature before product is loaded.
Product pre-cooling is critical because reefer units on trucks and trailers are designed to maintain temperature, not to cool large masses of warm product. A reefer trailer loaded with warm produce can take hours to pull down to the correct temperature, during which time the product may suffer quality degradation. Common product pre-cooling methods include hydro-cooling (cold water immersion), forced-air cooling (high-velocity cold air), vacuum cooling (rapid evaporation), and room cooling (cold storage exposure).
Trailer pre-cooling should begin at least 90 minutes to 2 hours before loading, depending on the target temperature and ambient conditions. The trailer should reach the specified shipping temperature before any product is loaded, and the pre-cool should be documented as part of the shipping record. Verification includes checking both the supply air temperature and the return air temperature to confirm the entire trailer space is at the correct level.
Skipping or rushing the pre-cooling process is one of the most common causes of temperature excursions during transit. Shippers and carriers who follow proper pre-cooling protocols significantly reduce the risk of product loss and ensure that the cold chain remains intact from the moment product enters the trailer.
