Telematics
Technology that combines GPS tracking, onboard diagnostics, and wireless communication to transmit real-time vehicle data to fleet managers.
Telematics is a technology discipline that integrates telecommunications and informatics to collect, transmit, and analyze data from commercial vehicles in real time. A telematics system typically consists of a hardware device installed in the vehicle that connects to the engine's diagnostic port, a GPS receiver for location tracking, cellular or satellite communication capability, and a cloud-based software platform for data processing and visualization.
In fleet management, telematics provides a continuous stream of operational data including vehicle location, speed, engine RPM, idle time, fuel consumption, hard braking events, rapid acceleration, and diagnostic trouble codes. This data enables carriers to monitor driver behavior, optimize fuel efficiency, predict maintenance needs, and improve overall fleet safety and productivity.
Advanced telematics platforms incorporate machine learning algorithms that can identify patterns in vehicle and driver data to predict component failures before they occur, recommend optimal maintenance schedules, and score driver safety performance. For temperature-controlled fleets, telematics integrates reefer unit monitoring to track compartment temperatures, reefer engine hours, fuel usage, and alarm conditions alongside standard vehicle data.
