ELD (Electronic Logging Device)

An Electronic Logging Device is a hardware device connected to a commercial truck's engine that automatically records the driver's driving time and hours of service status. The ELD mandate, fully enforced by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration since December 2019, requires nearly all commercial motor vehicle drivers to use ELDs instead of paper logbooks to track their compliance with hours of service regulations.

ELDs connect to the vehicle's engine control module through the diagnostic port and automatically capture data including engine hours, vehicle movement, miles driven, and location. The device tracks when the vehicle is in motion and when it is stationary, creating an electronic record of the driver's duty status that is far more accurate and tamper-resistant than hand-written paper logs.

Impact on Cold Chain Logistics

The ELD mandate has had significant implications for refrigerated freight operations. By enforcing strict compliance with the 11-hour driving limit and 14-hour on-duty window, ELDs have reduced the flexibility that drivers previously had to stretch their hours to complete deliveries. For temperature-sensitive loads that require timely delivery, this means shippers and brokers must plan routes and schedules more carefully to ensure that loads can be picked up and delivered within the driver's available hours.

ELD data also supports cold chain quality management by providing verifiable records of transit times, stop durations, and route deviations. When combined with reefer unit temperature data and GPS tracking, ELD records create a comprehensive picture of the entire transportation event. This data is valuable for freight claims, carrier performance analysis, and supply chain optimization efforts.
