Pre-Trip Inspection
A systematic check of a commercial vehicle's safety-critical components performed by the driver before operating the vehicle each day.
A pre-trip inspection is a thorough examination of a commercial motor vehicle's key safety components that drivers are required to perform before driving each day, as mandated by FMCSA regulations under 49 CFR 392.7 and 396.13. The inspection covers critical systems including brakes, tires, steering, lights, mirrors, horn, windshield wipers, coupling devices, emergency equipment, and cargo securement.
For refrigerated operations, the pre-trip inspection also includes verifying the reefer unit's operation, checking the set temperature against the shipping requirements, confirming fuel levels in the reefer's independent fuel tank, inspecting door seals for damage, and ensuring the temperature monitoring equipment is functioning properly. A malfunctioning reefer discovered before departure can prevent an entire load from being compromised.
While regulations require drivers to be satisfied that the vehicle is in safe operating condition before driving, many carriers mandate standardized pre-trip inspection checklists that go beyond the regulatory minimum. Digital pre-trip inspection tools allow drivers to complete inspections on mobile devices with photo documentation, automatic flagging of recurring issues, and direct notification to maintenance teams for any defects found.
