DOT Inspection
A roadside or facility safety inspection conducted by federal or state enforcement officers to verify compliance with commercial vehicle regulations.
A DOT inspection is a safety examination of a commercial motor vehicle and its driver conducted by certified inspectors from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) or authorized state enforcement officers. These inspections can occur at roadside checkpoints, weigh stations, carrier facilities, or during traffic stops, and are designed to ensure that vehicles and drivers comply with federal safety regulations.
There are six levels of DOT inspections, ranging from Level I (the most comprehensive North American Standard Inspection covering both driver and vehicle) through Level VI (which focuses specifically on radioactive materials). A Level I inspection includes examination of the driver's credentials, HOS records, medical certificate, and vehicle components including brakes, tires, lights, steering, suspension, frame, and cargo securement.
Inspection results are recorded in the FMCSA's Safety Measurement System and directly impact a carrier's CSA scores. Vehicles or drivers found with critical violations may be placed out of service, meaning they cannot operate until the violations are corrected. Carriers can reduce their inspection exposure through strong preventive maintenance programs, thorough pre-trip inspections, and robust driver training on compliance requirements.
