Pool Distribution
A shipping strategy where a full truckload is sent to a regional hub, then broken into smaller deliveries for multiple nearby destinations.
Pool distribution is a shipping strategy in which a shipper sends a full truckload of product from the origin to a regional distribution point, where the shipment is broken down and delivered to multiple final destinations within the region using smaller, local delivery vehicles. This approach combines the economy of full truckload pricing for the long-haul leg with the flexibility of local delivery for the final mile.
In cold chain logistics, pool distribution is widely used by food manufacturers and produce shippers who need to supply dozens of retail stores, restaurants, or distribution centers within a metropolitan area. Rather than shipping individual LTL orders to each location at a high per-unit cost, or sending full trucks to locations that cannot receive an entire truckload, the shipper fills a reefer trailer and sends it to a pool point where the product is sorted and delivered locally.
Cost and Service Benefits
Pool distribution typically reduces total transportation costs by 15 to 30 percent compared to shipping individual LTL orders to each destination. The savings come from the lower per-mile cost of the full truckload linehaul combined with the shorter distances of the local delivery routes. Transit times can also be competitive with or better than direct LTL service because the linehaul moves without the intermediate stops and terminal handling that slow LTL shipments.
Successful pool distribution requires a reliable partner at the pool point who can handle the deconsolidation and local delivery efficiently while maintaining temperature control throughout the process. The pool point operator must have adequate refrigerated warehouse space, a fleet of temperature-controlled delivery vehicles, and the operational expertise to manage tight delivery windows that are typical in foodservice and retail distribution.
