Consolidation

Combining multiple smaller shipments from one or more shippers into a single larger shipment for more efficient transportation.

Consolidation in freight logistics is the practice of combining multiple smaller shipments into a single, larger shipment to achieve more efficient and cost-effective transportation. By filling a trailer with freight from several shippers heading to the same region, the cost per unit shipped decreases because the fixed costs of the truck, driver, and fuel are spread across more freight.

In the cold chain industry, consolidation is a critical strategy for shippers whose individual order volumes do not fill an entire reefer trailer. Rather than paying for a full truckload with a half-empty trailer or accepting the longer transit times and additional handling of traditional LTL service, shippers can participate in consolidation programs that combine their freight with compatible shipments from other companies.

Temperature Compatibility

Consolidating refrigerated freight requires careful attention to temperature compatibility. Frozen products at -10 degrees Fahrenheit cannot be consolidated with fresh produce requiring 34 degrees Fahrenheit in a single-zone trailer. Successful cold chain consolidation programs group shipments by temperature range and use multi-temperature trailers with movable bulkheads when combining chilled and frozen products.

Consolidation also introduces product compatibility considerations beyond temperature. Strongly scented commodities such as onions or seafood must be separated from products that can absorb odors. Ethylene-producing fruits should not be consolidated with ethylene-sensitive vegetables. Experienced cold chain consolidators understand these compatibility requirements and build them into their load planning processes to protect every shipper's product quality.
