Geofence

A virtual geographic boundary created using GPS technology that triggers automated alerts or actions when a vehicle enters or exits the defined area.

A geofence is a virtual perimeter defined around a real-world geographic area using GPS or RFID technology. In fleet management, geofences are typically set up around key locations such as shipper facilities, receiver docks, distribution centers, fuel stops, rest areas, and customer locations. When a GPS-equipped vehicle crosses a geofence boundary, the system automatically triggers predefined actions such as sending notifications, updating shipment status, or logging arrival and departure times.

Geofencing enables automated operational workflows that reduce manual communication and improve data accuracy. For example, when a truck enters a geofence around a receiver's facility, the system can automatically send an arrival notification to the shipper, update the TMS with a timestamp, begin tracking detention time, and alert the dock scheduling system to prepare for unloading.

In cold chain operations, geofences can trigger temperature verification checks when vehicles arrive at pickup or delivery locations, ensuring that reefer settings are confirmed at each critical point in the supply chain. Advanced geofencing applications include restricting vehicles to approved routes, monitoring unauthorized stops, tracking dwell time at customer locations for detention billing, and providing automated proof of delivery documentation.
