Genset (Generator Set)
A portable diesel generator mounted on a trailer chassis that provides electrical power to a refrigerated container during road transport.
A genset, short for generator set, is a portable diesel-powered electrical generator used to supply power to refrigerated intermodal containers during the trucking legs of their journey. Unlike reefer trailers that have self-contained refrigeration units with their own engines, refrigerated intermodal containers require an external power source when they are being transported by truck between the shipper or receiver facility and the rail terminal.
Gensets are typically mounted on the truck chassis or on a sliding frame beneath the container. They generate the electrical power needed to run the container's refrigeration compressor, fans, and control systems. A standard genset produces 10 to 15 kilowatts of power and consumes approximately 1 to 2 gallons of diesel fuel per hour of operation, depending on the ambient temperature and the cooling demand.
The availability of gensets can be a logistics bottleneck in intermodal cold chain operations. During peak produce shipping season, genset shortages at major rail terminals can delay the pickup and delivery of refrigerated containers, potentially compromising product quality. Carriers and intermodal marketing companies must manage their genset fleets carefully, ensuring adequate supply at high-volume terminals and efficient cycling between inbound and outbound moves.
Genset maintenance is critical for cold chain reliability. A genset failure during the drayage leg means the refrigerated container loses its power source, and the temperature inside begins to rise. Regular service intervals, pre-trip inspections, and fuel level verification are essential to preventing costly temperature excursions caused by genset malfunctions.
