Data Logger
A small electronic device placed inside shipments to continuously record temperature, humidity, or other conditions throughout transit.
A data logger is a compact electronic device that continuously records environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, light exposure, or vibration throughout the shipping and storage process. In cold chain logistics, temperature data loggers are placed inside shipments to create an unbroken record of the thermal conditions experienced by the product from origin to destination, providing documentary evidence that the cold chain was maintained.
Modern data loggers range from simple single-use devices costing $2 to $10 each to sophisticated multi-parameter recorders costing $50 to $500. Basic units record temperature at programmable intervals, typically every 5 to 15 minutes, and store the data internally for download at the destination. Advanced models include USB connectivity for direct computer download, Bluetooth or NFC for smartphone reading, and LCD displays that show current temperature, minimum and maximum temperature, and alarm status.
Regulatory Requirements
Many regulatory frameworks and customer requirements mandate the use of data loggers for temperature-sensitive shipments. The FDA FSMA Sanitary Transportation Rule requires temperature monitoring during transit, and pharmaceutical regulations such as USP 1079 and GDP guidelines specify data logger use for drug product transportation. Major retailers and foodservice distributors often require suppliers to include data loggers in every reefer shipment, with the temperature data reviewed as part of the receiving inspection.
The data captured by loggers serves multiple purposes beyond compliance. It provides evidence for freight claims when temperature damage occurs, helps identify chronic temperature problems on specific lanes or with specific carriers, supports HACCP verification requirements, and creates a historical database that can be analyzed to improve cold chain performance over time. The small cost of a data logger is negligible compared to the product value it protects and the claims documentation it provides.
