Thermal Blanket
An insulating cover placed over freight to provide passive temperature protection during transit without active refrigeration.
A thermal blanket, also known as a cargo blanket or insulated pallet cover, is a reusable or disposable insulating cover placed over freight to provide passive temperature protection during transportation and handling. Unlike active refrigeration systems, thermal blankets do not generate cold or heat; instead, they slow the rate of heat transfer between the product and the surrounding environment.
Thermal blankets are constructed from reflective materials such as metalized polyester film, foam insulation, or multi-layer composites that combine reflective barriers with insulating cores. High-quality blankets can maintain product temperatures within the desired range for 12 to 48 hours depending on the ambient conditions, the mass of the product, and the starting temperature.
Applications in Cold Chain
Thermal blankets are used in several cold chain scenarios. They protect pallets of chilled or frozen product during cross-dock transfers when freight must briefly move through non-temperature-controlled spaces. They provide supplemental insulation for products shipped in dry vans when the shipper determines that full reefer service is not cost-justified but some temperature protection is needed. They also serve as a backup layer of protection inside reefer trailers for high-value pharmaceutical shipments.
The economics of thermal blankets make them attractive for shippers who need moderate temperature protection without the full cost of refrigerated transportation. A disposable pallet cover costs $5 to $15 per unit, while reusable thermal blankets cost $50 to $200 but can be used for dozens or hundreds of shipments. Compared to the $500 to $1,500 premium for reefer service over dry van on a typical lane, thermal blankets offer a significant cost reduction for products that can tolerate the slightly wider temperature range they provide.
