Tandem Axle
A pair of axles positioned close together on a truck or trailer that distributes weight more evenly and increases load-carrying capacity.
A tandem axle configuration consists of two axles mounted in close proximity, typically 40 to 60 inches apart, on either the drive section of a tractor or the rear section of a trailer. This dual-axle arrangement distributes the weight of the vehicle and its cargo over a larger area, increasing the total weight the vehicle can legally carry while reducing the load on any single axle to comply with federal bridge formula requirements and state weight limits.
On a typical Class 8 tractor-trailer combination, the tractor features a tandem drive axle rated for up to 34,000 pounds, and the trailer has a tandem rear axle also rated for up to 34,000 pounds. The position of the trailer tandems is adjustable using a sliding mechanism, allowing drivers to shift weight between the trailer axles and the tractor's drive axles to achieve legal weight distribution at each axle group.
Proper tandem axle positioning is critical for legal compliance, as overweight axle violations can result in significant fines and out-of-service orders. Drivers must know how to slide their trailer tandems and verify axle weights at truck stops or weigh stations. For refrigerated loads, the weight of the reefer unit itself (approximately 1,500 to 2,000 pounds) must be factored into the weight distribution calculations, slightly reducing the available payload capacity compared to dry van trailers.

Payload Capacity
The maximum weight of freight a truck or trailer can legally carry, calculated by subtracting the vehicle's tare weight from the gross vehicle weight limit.
Reefer Trailer
A semi-trailer with integrated refrigeration, typically 53 feet long, designed to be pulled by a tractor and maintain precise temperature control.
