NMFC Code

The National Motor Freight Classification code is a standardized numbering system that assigns a unique identifier to every commodity that can be shipped by LTL carriers. Each NMFC code corresponds to a specific product description and a freight class, which together determine how the product is rated for LTL pricing. The NMFC system is maintained and updated by the National Motor Freight Traffic Association through its Classification Committee.

NMFC codes are structured as a primary code number followed by sub-codes that provide more specific product descriptions. For example, the primary NMFC code for frozen food products might have sub-codes that differentiate between frozen vegetables, frozen meats, frozen desserts, and other frozen food categories, each potentially carrying a different freight class based on their specific density, handling, and value characteristics.

Application in Cold Chain Shipping

For refrigerated LTL shipments, the NMFC code determines not only the freight class and base rate but also any special handling requirements that the LTL carrier must observe. The product description associated with the NMFC code may specify temperature requirements, stacking limitations, orientation requirements, and other handling instructions that the carrier must follow to prevent damage during consolidation and delivery.

Shippers should maintain a current reference of the NMFC codes for all products they ship LTL and ensure that these codes are accurately reflected on bills of lading. The NMFC classification is updated regularly, and codes can change when the Classification Committee reviews commodity descriptions and density data. Using outdated or incorrect NMFC codes can result in carrier inspections, reclassification charges, and invoice adjustments that disrupt the shipper's cost projections and carrier relationships.
