FTL (Full Truckload)

A shipping mode where a single shipper fills an entire trailer with their freight, contracting for the full capacity of the vehicle.

Full Truckload, commonly abbreviated as FTL, is a freight shipping mode in which a single shipper contracts for the exclusive use of an entire trailer. The shipment typically goes directly from the origin to the destination without intermediate stops or transfers, making it the fastest and most secure method for shipping large quantities of goods.

In the refrigerated freight market, FTL is the dominant shipping mode because temperature-controlled products benefit from the direct, non-stop transit that eliminates the multiple handling events and door openings that occur in less-than-truckload shipping. A standard reefer FTL load uses a 53-foot trailer with approximately 2,500 to 2,800 cubic feet of cargo space and a maximum payload weight of around 44,000 to 45,000 pounds.

FTL pricing is based on a per-mile rate that varies by lane, season, equipment type, and market conditions. Reefer FTL rates typically carry a premium of 15 to 30 percent above dry van rates due to the additional equipment, fuel, and maintenance costs associated with the refrigeration unit. Rates also vary based on whether the shipment is on a high-volume lane with good backhaul opportunities or a more remote lane where the carrier may need to deadhead to their next load.

Shippers typically choose FTL for loads exceeding 10,000 pounds or more than 10 pallets, though the economic crossover point between LTL and FTL depends on the specific lane, commodity, and market conditions. ArrowLane helps shippers determine the most cost-effective mode for each shipment.
