Drop Trailer

A logistics arrangement where the carrier leaves a trailer at a facility for loading or unloading and returns later to retrieve it.

A drop trailer program is a logistics arrangement in which a carrier drops off an empty or loaded trailer at a shipper or receiver facility and departs with the tractor, returning later to pick up the trailer once it has been loaded or unloaded. This contrasts with live loading or live unloading, where the driver and tractor wait at the facility while the trailer is being worked.

Drop trailer programs offer significant advantages for both shippers and carriers. Shippers gain flexibility to load or unload trailers on their own schedule without the pressure of a waiting driver and ticking detention clock. Carriers avoid the lost productivity of having drivers idle at facilities for hours, freeing drivers to make other pickups and deliveries while the trailer is being worked.

Cold Chain Considerations

For refrigerated operations, drop trailer programs require special attention to reefer unit management. When a reefer trailer is dropped for loading, the shipper must ensure the refrigeration unit continues to operate at the correct temperature setting. This means checking fuel levels in the reefer unit's diesel tank, verifying the temperature setpoint, and monitoring the unit during the loading period. Some facilities have electrical hookups that allow reefer trailers to run on shore power while parked, reducing diesel consumption.

Drop trailer programs require the carrier or shipper to maintain a pool of extra trailers to support the program, since trailers spend more total time at facilities compared to live loading operations. The capital cost of these additional trailers must be weighed against the operational savings from reduced driver wait time and improved facility throughput.
