Base Rate
The core transportation charge for moving freight from origin to destination, before any surcharges or accessorial fees are added.
The base rate, also called the linehaul rate, is the fundamental transportation charge for moving freight from the origin to the destination. It represents the core cost of the truck, driver, and operating expenses required to make the trip, exclusive of any variable surcharges, accessorial charges, or special service fees. The base rate is the starting point from which the total cost of a shipment is built.
For full truckload shipments, the base rate is typically expressed as a per-mile charge multiplied by the total miles of the route, or as a flat rate for the specific lane. Reefer base rates are higher than dry van base rates on the same lane because they reflect the additional capital cost of the refrigerated trailer, the higher maintenance expenses for the refrigeration equipment, and the premium paid to drivers for operating temperature-controlled equipment.
Factors Affecting Base Rates
Base rates are influenced by numerous factors including the distance and geography of the lane, the origin and destination market conditions, the time of year and seasonal demand patterns, the type of equipment required, the market balance between freight supply and truck capacity, and the shipper's volume and consistency. Lanes that originate in regions with abundant outbound freight and deliver to regions with good backhaul opportunities tend to have lower base rates because carriers can maintain high utilization.
When comparing rates from different carriers or brokers, it is essential to understand whether the quoted rate is a base rate or an all-in rate that includes surcharges. A carrier quoting a lower base rate but charging higher fuel surcharges and accessorials may have a higher total cost than a carrier with a higher base rate but fewer add-on charges. ArrowLane provides transparent rate breakdowns so shippers can make accurate comparisons.
